So here we are, a new R.C car racing game on Steam. Now, I loved playing Sega's R.C Grand Prix way back in the very late 80's and my, was that game fun. Now over 25 years later, we have VRC Pro on PC, this game is much less an arcade knock around and goes much deeper into the simulation category.

 

10 minutes in and I'm thinking to myself that this game is way too twitchy to be any fun, then after practice session after practice session, somehow it clicks. Now even after it has clicked it's still played as if in fast forward and if you only have a small monitor, you will need to customise the camera behind the car to be playable.

 

So getting the game going for the first time is just crazy as everything moves so fast by the time you think to turn the corner, you have already gone past the apex and right over into the barrier. Now this does take time to adjust to, but once you do it a very good sim and one of those rare sim's that allows you to just load the game up and go on a practice track and just mess around flipping the car around over jumps and just having some serious fun!

 

Back on the home menu of the game, you have a lot to take in so I'm just going to mention what I feel is relevant for this review. You can practice with any car on any track, then you can build up a car and the options here again are simply staggering, with options for a monster truck style car all the way to one of the prototype endurance cars that you see in the Le Mans 24 Hour races. Then you have Time Trials and I'm not going to say what these are as they were even on the Sega game 25 years ago! So next up is events and these are the main races of the game where you have to qualify for the even against real people from around the world, so imagine a mini iRacing and you are there! Lastly you have multi-player and again you can guess what this is.

 

But you also have the option to see replays from racers all around the world, and car set-up where you can make tweaks to your car and change motors or chassis even wheels and tyres. You can even go into and make changes with aerodynamics and electronics. Some of these options can really help your performance in races if you can master them.

 

We said the game is a simulation and to prove how much of a sim this is on the developers main website you can buy a Virtual RC USB dongle that is not virtual at all, where you can connect a spare receiver and you can use your real transmitter in the game. So not only does the game look great and have speed to die for making Wipeout seem like a Sunday shopping trip in comparison, but has a great and realistic car physics to boot. You can use your real controller that you would use in real life to test options and set ups in the virtual game world saving time and money.

 

So all in all we have a great serous R.C simulation game that allows you to just have a few minutes and mess about in the world, with a toy car. But also has great training and learning credentials as some of these cars in the real world can cost thousands of pounds so a £30 game on steam is a steal.
