Fast paced, intense indie titles are nothing that we haven't seen before. As a community we seem to enjoy taking on games that force us to our human limits, some gamers love when it comes down to reaction time and thinking on your feet. However, mixing the grinding ingredients from any given MMO and the insane speed of 60 Second Hero is something entirely new.
Tap Heroes was made by just one developer, Daniel Hjelm, on his own, and is a title that seemingly steals a lot from other genres then blends them to forge something unique. It's technically an action-fighting RPG with fourth wall lashings thrown in. This melting pot of ideas has resulted in a game where you can choose to play, or just watch.
To explain, Tap Heroes is based on the player, an invisible entity who assists the three heroes (a mage, warrior and rogue) performing all the vital tasks from the background. Everything revolves are your taps to begin with, as they're your main source of damage and healing to help your trio through the vicious world around them. But this changes as your party becomes stronger, you'll gradually fade from usefulness.
Just to clarify though, all this takes place on a pixelated, adorable 2D plane. Where everything looks like it was taken from an 80's children's picturebook, if that were to have existed. But, the colourful art style matches the gameplay nicely, it doesn't draw you away from the intensity that does actually ramp up very highly in this game.
In a nutshell however, Tap Heroes can be totally summed up in a simplistic, single sentence. It's a game where you tap the screen in different places in order to buy upgrades and progress to the next level without dying. That's really about all there is to it.
While uttering enthralling and very fun to begin with, because you're clicking all over the place to stop yourself from meeting an early grave, Tap Heroes can quickly become incredibly menial and dull. This is because of the 'auto-attack' system that the game has in place while you're not playing, which gets your trio to attack without prompting.
The fundamental flaw with this system is that if your other characters are strong enough to counter any damage being dealt and your healing faster than you're being hit, then you can indefinitely get coins without even trying. While this is a big problem, it makes sense when you realise that Tap Heroes has three hundred levels for the player to battle through.
And for the most of us, we probably can't be bothered with that. It's incredible that it offers that kind of challenge, but it then doesn't give anything in return to help the player towards it. Tap Heroes, despite it's oodles of fun, would really benefit from some form of cheesy story mode, or a multiplayer function where you try to 'out tap' other people because what it offers is fantastic, but only for a scarce few hours.
