If the title alone of this game doesn't get you giddy, excited or a mixture of the two together, then it's lost on you. But if you're among the many that loves robots, roller derby’s, disco's or dodgeball, then you're in for a proper treat. This, somewhat psychedelic, electronic and neon fuelled arcade game is the pinnacle of Indie creativity, it makes the player excited just be involved.
The entire game is built around the player taking control of a small mechanical robot who is placed into a series for combative training simulations for giggles, then serious dodgeball. Depending on the mode you choose, you'll be greeted with a long series of options, including training, bot matches, challenges, arcade mode and this is just in single player mode. There's more still housed within multiplayer and the sheer replay value is immense.
Using a combination of the WASD keys and the mouse, you must do epic, leathered, battle against other players or bots of your choosing. You are given the option to use a gamepad in-game but the Beside the fact that you're a robot, sometimes with a moustache, the soundtrack is fantastically electric. Charged with limitless energy, this game will welcome you with open arms and then hug you so tightly that you won't want to move from the screen.
In terms of objective gameplay, this title is so basic that even saying it has a base objective is actually inaccurate. You choose a mode, you then play that mode until you tire of it, then you either exit the game or you choose another, possibly different mode. It's wonderfully simple and is delivered in such a way that it cannot help but be loved by all who decide to play this new, fresh faced experience.
The graphics alone match the music, with entire arena's that ignite into a spectacle of neon, bright colours as the match or challenge gets more intense, coupled with the track. It's a sight to behold and is something you'll get used to after an hour or so. If anything, it's too harsh on the eyes to begin with, even with the graphics set on medium it actually hurts if you've got your brightness setting just a little too high.
As the game has only just been released all the little problems like the jump key, space bar, lagging the frame rate and internet connectivity on the multiplayer features been not so fantastic, I can forgive. My only other issue is the difficulty spike on some of the challenges, knowing where the ball bounces and lands is critical to being able to win and when there's about four other bots aiming at your virtual skull, it suddenly becomes very, very difficult indeed. The fast pace adds to this chaos, for better or worse.
Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is fantastic though, it hands you a fresh take on faster paced Indie titles that actually are fun. Despite the smaller issues it gives players a concept that will likely keep them entertained for days at a time.
