What is Retro Gaming?
Depending on who you are, it can mean many different things. It can be the nostalgic feeling that you get when you pick up a game you remember you enjoyed back in the day and play through it again, reliving those memories bit-by-bit. Or it can mean picking up a game with linear graphics and bulky controls. It is all down to the individual.
For me, Retro Gaming is all about picking up a copy of a classic game and playing it through again. Some of my favourite games ever have been on old consoles such as Playstation One and XBOX and even today, I sit glassy eyed in my room when I think about them. Some of these games played a big part in why I decided to become a gamer, and that is why they will always have a fond place in my memories.
One of the biggest points for me is the fact that I think they just don’t make games like they used to. Gone are the days of immersive story lines and strong characters, instead replacing these things with online features and additional content that will decimate your bank account. I can only think of a handful of games that are available on the next generation consoles that have gripped me totally with a fantastic story line and great characters, each one produced by the fantastic Tell-Tale team. All the big name games such as COD and Battlefield have pathetic solo campaigns that anybody dedicated enough can finish in a day.
This is where I feel they are going wrong, and even though we have games such as Dragonage Inquisition and Witcher 3 out there now, I feel they are all lacking something that the old games had. With the promise of the new Final Fantasy giving players hours of game time, and more Tell-Tale games hitting the market, maybe the industry is starting to correct the issue; but only time will tell.
For the next couple of weeks I will be looking at some of the best games that have been released on the old consoles and why, in my opinion, they are little gems. But if you guys out there have any games you would like me to mention then please feel free to get in touch with us on the site.
