As you may be aware, I have always had a soft spot for post apocalyptic games. Rage and Fallout 3 have been highly successful in the past and they have also been some of the best games on the market. So when I heard that a Mad Max game had been announced, I had to have a look and see what was being offered!

 

The films (all three of them) are fantastic and they are the films that made Mel Gibson a superstar. It’s set in an Australia that has been ravaged by war. Feral gangs now patrol the outback and the key to survival are vehicles. It’s dark, gritty and great fun. But what will the game have to offer?

 

Well, it’s been revealed that the basic storyline will involve taking on various missions and quests to scavenge and hunt down parts to make the most deadly vehicle in the outback.

 

It seems that they are following in the same tracks as Rage, which means it will rely heavily on vehicles and undertaking various missions to collect parts. But they also assure us that it will be third-person, so I’m thinking that it might use the same combat system as Fallout.

 

The trailers look fantastic and it seems like they have put a lot of effort into designing the game. It has the feel of the original film, and at a glance looks like they have even included Mel Gibson’s dodgy hairstyle! So if you take all this into account the gameplay should be a mixture of Rage and Fallout 3 (in theory). But is this a good combination?

 

Some people would say yes. The mixture of the free-roaming of Fallout coupled with the intense racing of Rage should be an interesting combination. But others would say no, because it should be kept to either one or the other. It all depends on your gaming style and what you want from the game. Many people won’t remember the film, or even know what it is (the original was released in 1979!) so is this game going to appeal to them?

 

Another issue which would be worth investigating is whether or not it is set before/after/during the films. If so, how are they going to fit it in for the people who have seen the films?

 

When games have been produced based on films, it’s always either been a prequel or a sequel or they have followed the same lines as the film. If this is set at different intervals to the films then it could get very complicated.So we all await with bated breath to see what happens and whether or not this will be a massive hit or a disastrous miss!
