Here is the game I’ve been waiting for, for what seems like months. Now before I start I will say that Forza 1-3 were some of the best racing games ever made and 4 and 5 were big disappointments to me as they both felt very rushed and undercooked for release.
So here is Turn 10's second attempt on the Xbox One and from my time with it, I really enjoyed it but something does feel off but I can't quite put my finger on what. Well, maybe after these 800 words I’ll maybe see what’s wrong?
So first of all I have to mention the really cheesy intro of two young boys running with the voice-over, going on about there’s no reason why we race but we always will or some bull like that. But after this is over, we are jetted over to Rio for a nice race in the new Ford GT and this is a sense of things to come. Big beefy vehicles and highly detailed backgrounds that have a nice array of colours washed over them. But like most racing games most of the tracks have been here before. Just with added details.
One of the most talked about features is the inclusion of night time racing and wet weather and while these are great additions to the game some people might wonder why it's taken so long for these to be added, as Project Gotham Racing 4 had these and more! And that was all the way back in 2007.
So what we have here is a truly stunning game and I'll mention it here as everyone always asks but yes it’s running 60FPS in 1080p. The game still features James May and Richard Hammond but does not say from Top Gear. It has them as Automotive journalists and Jeremy Clarkson has been cut and from when I was in the Forzavista mode it seems to me this is where he was as there is one voice over detailing the car but if you select another option it has a video playing with soft music but no voice over and it does feel as if something is off. Now this can't be held with Turn 10 as you can't have anybody that the BBC does not want included with the Top Gear licence.
So we have over 450 vehicles and that number is more than twice as many as Forza 5. So this is a big help to fill the game out as you need cars to drive in a racing game. So next up, is the single player story mode, and here we have “Stories of Motorsport” and will have over 70 hours of content. The racing has had a tweak too as cars on track has gone up from around 16, if I'm remembering correctly, in Forza 5 and now in 6 we can have up to 24 and my this does fill up some of the tighter circuits.
The big problem with this game though is the racing itself and one minutes you are in the middle of the pack but the AI just wants to ram into you, then after you manage to break free there are almost always two or three cars that shoot off into the distance and no matter what level setting you have the computer controlled cars on this always happens. So it’s a mess at the start of the race then by the start of lap 2 you find yourself in wide open air and have to power through the next lap to catch the leaders then when you pass its open air again.
So it does not feel like a true simulation racing game but more like the classic arcade game Ridge Racer, maybe that why I like this so much. But don't let that put you off the cars feel great on the track and have been tuned so much since Forza 5 as I really did not like that game even though it was one of only a handful of games I had at the time.
So the water on the track is simply superb, as most games have rain running down the screen and reduce the grip on the track. But with Forza 6 Turn 10 has actually put puddles on the track where the water builds up and if you hit one of these at speed then you can easily spin off the track and I did this a few times until you learn where the puddles are on the track and you have to move off the racing line to miss these but makes the game just feel that much more realistic.
I must also mention the multiplayer part of the game and again like most multiplayer games I don't often mess too much with then as you normally get a few people in the group that when they aren’t doing well they will just try and ram into you and cause crashes and to me this is not fun. But you can have 24 cars on the track with all the custom designs on each car.
The game plays super smooth with no slowdown, and with the incredibly chunky highly detailed graphics, it does show that the Xbox One can push much more than most developers seem to think. But the game plays great and that’s all you can ask for, I really hope that next year’s game will be Forza Horizon Vs Project Gotham Racing as I would love to see the return of PGR as that was a truly great series and for some reason has just lost Microsoft's love.
