So here we are again, another year and another FIFA.

 

I remember a time when FIFA was only big in England and EA went for cover and advert stars of big premier league players like Wayne Rooney. Even back in the early days, they had David Ginola, David Beckham and Thierry Henry and even the first ever FIFA had David Platt on the cover.

 

But for the last few years FIFA has tried to grow out of the UK market and become the world superpower that it is now. It now teams up with the biggest player on the planet in Lionel Messi. With this, EA has produced a very festive advert for FIFA this year and not only features Messi, but now has Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard playing the game of FIFA.

 

So now we have two of the world’s best known football players in a silly Christmas advert for what must be one of the best games of the year. No one talks about FIFA in Game of the Year talks but that has more to do with it being a tweaked version of last year’s game with added options and animations.

 

Now this sounds like a: “Oh god, they just added these 4 new modes to the same game as last year’s,” effort. However last year’s game was almost perfect so adding some new game modes and animations makes the game even better. Unfortunately, I personally don't think we will ever see the massive leap in quality that we did when the 07 engine was unleashed. This game has average reviews as the engine was leaps and bounds above all football games before but the games modes and teams were lacking. It was only a year or two later when the team had time to flesh out the game with added features and options that FIFA really started to shine as one of the best games of the year, each year, and every year!

 

On the other hand, the FIFA team has a problem on its hands as the Ignite engine was not a massive leap in performance as we were all lead to believe, but with FIFA 15 been the 2nd FIFA to be made with this engine, they have managed to do an awful lot of tweaks under the so called “bonnet”. And we now have a FIFA game that plays as good as it did with the 07 engine and the players and crowds are just simply jaw dropping with all the tiny details in the created worlds as they have now created every Premier League stadium in this year’s game.

 

All to help with the immersion for the series so back to the advert. It’s a funny nonsense kind of advert but they can do this now after years of hard work to make the core game of FIFA simply outstanding to play.
