Almost a year on from its initial release, Destiny returns with an all new 'legendary edition' featuring three expansions and a whole host of new weapons to wield, armour to acquire and enemies to expel. But is it really worth jumping back into orbit, or has the grind for gear become too tiresome?

First things first, if you didn't like the original Destiny, you won't like this. Although a lot has changed and Bungie should be given credit for their willingness to update, it's still the same premise. You head to the Tower, pick up your daily bounties, light up the Crucible before completing your daily/weekly missions and patrols. At times it is tedious but there's certainly something addictive that keeps players returning even a year later.

The Taken King is without a doubt the biggest and best DLC of the bunch. Remember the end of the original Destiny story? Yeah, it sort of follows on from there. I don't want to give too much away but there's a new enemy type, meaning players must learn their shooting patterns and abilities if they are to minimise damage taken. In the new Raids for example, this can mean the difference between failure and progression to the next stage. It is well worth learning which enemy duplicates itself upon receiving damage and which is able to generate its own Titanesque shield. These foes also offer significant challenge in the weekly nightfall strikes; incredibly hard missions that require full use of the raised level cap (forty in rank and a lot of light!) and a lot of teamwork and strategy. Since they require half of the quota for the aforementioned Raids, they're probably your best bet at gaining good gear. Just whack on a few ‘three of coins’ and you're set. This is probably one of the game’s greatest upgrades on the original title. Available from Xur in exchange for seven of your hard earned strange coins. Considering I was able to pick up an exotic after every three to four bosses I killed, it is well worth considering as a cheaper alternative to purchasing an exotic engram.

Despite the obvious improvements, some of the game's initial frustrations remain. I'm left scratching my head over the concept of Raids. Not everyone has a fireteam full of friends at the ready to tackle what is undoubtedly the game's biggest and best challenge. I cannot fathom why Bungie have not incorporated some form of matchmaking for this mode, allowing players to seek out a team and test their hand at raiding. To put it bluntly, if you don't have friends willing to log on at the same time as you and join a party, you can't even attempt to finish one of the game's highlights. That kinda sucks.

However, credit where credit is due; Bungie keep plugging away with numerous updates to enhance the experience. Last weekend saw the Trials of Osiris return, and while I wasn't able to participate myself, I'm told the rewards were worth the struggle. The same cannot be said for the previous event, the Iron Banner. I felt like Bruce Banner controlling my rage at times where no matter how well I played my incompetent team would lose the game for me. Again, the matchmaking seemed flaky at times, but as with everything in Destiny, perseverance is key. The more you play, the greater the rewards you get. It just depends how much of your life you're willing to sacrifice to this universe.
