Not too long ago, David Cameron had the opportunity to review AiRace Speed on the Nintendo 3DS. This game is by the indie company QubicGames and has received a good deal of positive attention. I sat down with Mikaël Bourget to discuss the game and its future, you can listen to this interview on the One up Gaming Podcast episode 34.

 

One up Gaming, So who are you and what do you do?

Can you tell us a little bit more about AiRace Speed and what kind of gameplay it offers?

 

AiRace Speed is a 3DS eShop game, and the third title of the AiRace series containing two previous episodes on DSi.

In the game the player is flying at high-speed throughout challenging tracks composed of tunnels and big halls. The pilot can take control of one of 5 futuristic jets across 18 different levels.

AiRace Speed will let your Nintendo 3DS™ discover the true meaning of speed and adrenaline.

The 3D effects and the advanced graphics deliver a complete immersion, providing a unique feeling of speed and adrenaline.AiRace Speed is definitely a challenging title because it is extremely fast. But we, at QubicGames, enjoy developing difficult games. We think that the feeling of accomplishment after completing what you fought hard for is just awesome.

 

Does the game offer any additional specific features?

 

For each level, the scoring system is supported by online ranking leaderboards. There is no multiplayer mode that allows players to race together on the same track. However everybody can compete with fellow competitors around the world through the leaderboards. For each level it is possible to upload your score on a table displaying all other scores and the podium of the three best ones.

Also, AiRace Speed features 42 achievements to unlock by completing very specific objectives. Some of them are very difficult and some are rather original and amusing.

 

How much gameplay time can be expected with AiRace Speed?

 

To unlock all achievements, we believe that more than 10 hours of gameplay are required, except perhaps for ridiculously talented gamers. To simply complete all the levels, it probably takes around 3-5 hours.

But thanks to the ranking leaderboards the replay value is endless. AiRace Speed always gives the possibility to break records. Performing the absolute optimal race is probably unreachable by a human being. So there will always be one person on the top of the podium that every other player will want to beat. And this will happen on 18 different levels.

 

How long has the development of AiRace Speed taken?

 

AiRace Speed took around 10 months of development whereas AiRace and AiRace: Tunnel required in total together 8 months.

That’s because the game is much more complete and advanced. Besides, developing on Nintendo 3DS instead of DSi brings new challenges. For example it was necessary to handle the stereoscopic effect, which gives the unique 3D perspective. We had to design the levels with this in mind and properly balance the contrasts and the colors to deliver a comfortable and clear experience visually. We are happy with the result which gives a total immersion to the player.

 

Can you give a little summary pitch about AiRace Speed?

 

AiRace Speed is a package of:18 Spectacular tracks including endless ones, Scoring leaderboards, Clever level design, Immersive experience with good graphics and 3D effect, Challenge at high-speed, Achievements system. And all this at only $4,99, 4,99€ or £4,49.Plus it’s the latest sequel of a popular and praised racing series. And last but not least the jets look awesome!
